Vanimo Town is the capital of West Sepik Province (Sandaun) located near the PNG international border with the Republic of Indonesia. The province is made up of 4 districts with a total population of 185,790.Sandaun extends from the highlands of Telefomin district, the nothern side of the Papua New Guinea border with Indonesia with virgin rain forest covering the flood plains from the green river through ruggered mountains and lowlands to the coastline of Aitape Lumi district adjoining East Sepik Province.
Transport service by road from Vanimo Town to all districts is a big challenge for the province politician and administration who depend on third level air transport system. Transportation cost of delivering basic government service to outlying rural villages consumes a huge portion of the province annual budget.
