Oro known as Nortern province is the nort side of Owen Stanley Range streatching to the coast line of the Solomon Sea between Morobe and Milne Bay Province.In 1951 the Mt. Lamington volcano erupted and killed 2,942 people as well as destroyed the District Headqeaters at Higaturu. The station was then move to Popondetta and is the current seat of the Oro Provincial Government.Oro's 2 districts are Ijivitari and Sohe and has 8 Local Governments.According to the 2000 census the province population is 133,065.
With rich volcanic soil commercial crops as the oil palm, coffee, copra and cocoa are the province source of income.Tourist investors and visitors travel to Tuffi in the Oro Province because of the amazing coastal landscape & untouched fishing spots.
Oro has important Second World War historical sites and shares the famous Kokoda Trail with Central Province. Oro's major port is in Oro Bay.
