East Sepik Province (ESP) currently know as the Vanilla country became popular as the first province to export Vanilla. East Sepik Province son Sir Michael Thomas Somare is Papua New Guinea's current Prime Minister. He is known as the father of the nation and is called Chief.The mighty Sepik River (Wara Sipik) flows through East Sepik Province from Ambunti District to Angoram and out through Cape Gigir to the Bismarck Sea.
Wewak Town is the capital of the province. There are 6 districts and 26 local governments.The population of ESP is 343,181 according to the 2000 census figures.
Sepik is one of the major tourist destination in PNG. Road transportation links Wewak Town to Maprik,Drekikir,Yangoru,Wosera and Angoram districts. Access to Ambunti District is by air and river transport from Pagwi.Legends,myths,spirits,pukpuks,carvings and Haus Tambaran (Spirit House) associated with the traditional singsing and adult initiation ceremony is the heart of the Sepik Culture.
Carving in ESP is one source of income for villagers who are known for their traditional artistic talents.They sell their art work to tourists and visitors.
