Fearless at sea the motuans sail by lagatois (big sailing canoes) to trade traditional goods with the eastern gulf people.The traditional exchange is known as the Hiri Trade and is celebrated annually with the Hiri Moale Festival in NCD during the month of September.
Inland people known as the Koitabu co-existed with the Motu and exchance vegetable for fish and shells.The Koiari people live in the hills around the sogeri plateau.Varirata National park occupies Koiari traditional hunting ground.The Sirinumu Dam is also on Koiari land.
